Jamestown Events Gallery Launched

In response to the upcoming meeting to form a Committee for the Jamestown Centenary of Secondary Education, a Gallery of photos has been started through the efforts of "Ray", our forum Moderator. To quote Ray in the forum at this forum thread:

"The first time you use the Gallery, you will be required to re-register, but once you have done this you will be able to tick the "Remember Me" box for instant access thereafter. It is probably easiest if you use the same registration details as you have for the forum.

To see what's new, click "New Images" shown above outlined in red.
You may save your favourite images to your own private "Lightbox" and download them if you wish. The historical photos provided by the Jamestown Local History Group are watermarked and reduced in size, as they normally sell these to cover costs and raise a little money to support themselves.

The JLHG has generously offered a reduced price (20% off) to jamestownevents members for prints, the prices being $2 for A5 sized, and $2.50 for A4 sized prints with no added cost for colour where available. Post and Packaging is extra. This has not been costed as yet but should be about a $1, multiple orders, no extra P+P. All photos will be unwatermarked, High resolution computer prints on Glossy 230 gsm photopaper.

There is a list of all photos available in the General Discussion thread, under School Class Photos.

The JLHG is always looking for new photos if you should have any that we do not. They are unable to pay for them, but will gladly send donors a free copy of any other print in their archive in place of payment."

It's not necessary to register to view the photos, but if you'd like to comment on photos or upload your own school photos, registration is a necessity.

Jamestown SA Events - Then & Now

Jamestown's first pastoralist John Bristowe Hughes arrived in South Australia from Tasmania (then Van Diemen's Land) in 1840 with 30 sheep. In the early 1840's on hearing of the excellent country in the area around Bundaleer, centered his farming operations at Reedy Creek, around where North Bundaleer Homestead is now situated. His Bundaleer lease comprised a massive 312 square miles of prime land.

The Belalie Agricultural Area was one of a few offered for sale around 1870. Hundreds, each containing 100 square miles (64,000 acres) where surveyed and usually contained one town. The hundred of Belalie contained Jamestown. Some controversy at the time existed around the name of the township, named after the Governor of the time Sir James Fergusson. Some, including the first Editor of the 'Jamestown Review', John Burrough Collins called for the very musical title of Belalie.

Fergusson's home county of Ayr in Scotland accounts for may of the Street names found in Jamestown today: Ayr, Irvine, Muirkirk, Cumnock, Clyde, Doon, Kilmarnock and Arran Streets.
